a long-overdue update
I'm so sorry I haven't been around lately
this is a commission for a lovely lady, =Justyne, an illustration of her character, Declan.
I spent ages on the buildings, I'm not too good with painting architecture and this has been a learning experience for me.
Please don't use without permission! Thanks :)

:iconpawlack: done for an event in PixelBrush

Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3. I got my influences from so many places. There are stuff here that may not make sense to everyone but they do to me XD

Superheroes of PB

still a work in progress
entry for a contest at the PixelBrush forums
I don't attempt the comic style often, precisely because I think I am a lousy line artist. You can be good at painting at yet at the same time suck at inking, and vice versa. I've seen too many people who are fantastic painters, yet when it comes to drawing cartoons and such, they're a bit bleh.
Anyway, enough yaddling, I really need to get better at it.

Jack of Spades and Jack of Clubs

This is a relative 'quickie' (not really..but we only have a week to do it) or Conceptart.org's Character of the Week #104 The Four Brothers, I don't have the time to paint all four of them so I painted only the Jack of Spades and Jack of Clubs.

I have used references for both, mainly for the outfits. For the Jack of Spades ("is suave, sophisticated, and self centered"), I pretty much bastardized men's outfits from Van Dyck's portraits..ha ha ha, and for Jack of Clubs I just mishmashed lots of Spanish, German 16th century whatever armour together.

I also experimented with starting with greyscale then colour it, because it seems like many artists swear by this method. However it so did not go well for me, but at least now it confirms what I know that I suck at colouring greyscales and know to stick with starting my usual method. ha ha :P

master copy - Bouguereau: Virgil and Dante in Hell - update 2

at an hour's interval each. I know it looks like not much's happened between the two images, but I swear I was scribbling my heart out!

Taking a break from the master copy, I decided to do a speedpainting. However, a speedpainting for me means 3-4 hours. I know, terrible! I don't know when to stop; I just have to go on, and on, and on...until I realize that I spend way too much time than I should on a speedpainting.

hello hoi polloi!

so there! I finally gave in to the trend and made myself an art blog :P
this is going to be a place where I'm going to post my sketches, speedpaintings, work-in-progress shots and walkthroughs (I would call them 'tutorials' but I don't think I should be giving art advice as of yet so those are going to be little articles explaining how I work or why I do the things I do, etc.), and other arty stuff that I may or may not want to post in other galleries. Entries in this blog may be cross-posted in other forums.

I previously used LiveJournal to post such things, but I think now I'm going to make my arty-journals more publicly accessible (my LJ is mostly friends only, sorry!)!

I'm going to start my blog with a master copy of Bouguereau, painting called Virgil and Dante in Hell

I actually started this once before, some time last year. I even took the time to make a grid and everything...because I also wanted to learn how to use grids/see why so many people swear by this method. Blah! By the time I get to the fourth square I just gave up :/ and deleted the whole thing. So now I'm starting again - freehand. I guess what works best for some doesn't work for others.

I don't consider this my 'proper' artwork, but an imitation/master copy exercise. I hope by the end I will learn something, and I'm enjoying this so far!

One hour spent on this so far

My Dearest MMVIII

The text in italics is the description of the picture that I posted on other sites, and please bear in mind that I did this last year but never got round to posting it on dA, so when I said 'happy new year', I mean happy new year 2008. And when I come to think of it, this is also a big experiment in textures and textured brushes and many layers with lots of blending modes!

FIrst of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!!!

whee my first piece of the year
okay it's originally done as er, my dA journal header thingie....but i seem to have gotten carried away. It's a quickie that turned out to not be that quick.
yep the person on the right is a guy, and yep they're meant to be the same people from My Dearest picture, except that I changed the guy's eye colour from autumny green to steely blue. Plus I added eyeliners, because I felt like it and I like boys in eyeliner. ha ha!
is super vaintastic, but I used myself as reference for the girl. But then again, I also used my own photo as the reference for the girl in My Dearest ..may as well keep it consistent!
The guy is based on Ville Valo (just as in My Dearest), plus Jon Kortajarena. He's also a bit like Louis from Interview with a Vampire crossed with the kind of guys I see in goth and industrial clubs/clubnights around here, and also maybe a pinch of Marilyn Manson.
PS CS3 and a day

A gift for Ed Hall in a part of the PixelBrush's christmas gift exchange event. Needless to say it is really fun . It's my first attempt at pinup art, and this is very much inspired by Gil Elvgren. I may paint more of these in the future. What can I say? I like painting pretty girls and boys

Ancient Queen

I started painting this perhaps a month - or almost two - back. Prior to that I haven't been doing anything for a while - I was just so insanely busy. This is meant to be a 'warm-up', you know, when you haven't done something in a while you tend to get rusty.....so I wanted to do something relatively 'easy'.

This is very South-East Asian influenced, and also I wanted to do something fusion-y, and also some kind of ancient-queen lady thingie with lots of goldness

I hope I will do something more exciting in terms of concept and composition in my future works, but here it is for now :o

Some parts of the background have texture overlays from stock texture photos (esp on the top centre, top left and left side).

face closeup at 60% [link]

print will prolly be submitted later

edit: just removed the borders - the reason i put the borderes in the first place is that it'll match the 1.50:1.00 ratio required for print.
